 This jet established Messerchmitt's place in aviation history as the world's first turbo jet fighter to enter combat! In 1938 - 1942 the new gas turbine engines developed by BMW saw service in ME 262s. German leaders wanted this jet to serve as a bomber as well as a fighter and held production up on this plane. Top speed for the ME 262 was 540 mph and had a range of 652 miles. Four 30 mm MK 108 cannons were to be found in the nose area.
